Workington Amateur Operatic Society are pleased to announce three productions for 2019-2020. After a number of modern productions including Starlight Express, Hairspray and our forthcoming production of Monty Python’s Spamalot, we are stepping back in time to the ‘Golden Age’ of musical theatre.
Our Spring 2019 production of Carousel is a semi-staged concert version of the original show. It will see both our award winning junior section and our senior section join together to bring Rodgers and Hammerstein’s second musical triumph to life. The production will feature an orchestra, full cast and chorus. Katherine Jenkins and Alfie Boe took the lead roles in this concert version at the London Coliseum last April. The score of hit songs include; If I Loved You and You’ll Never Walk Alone. This is the first time WAOS has performed Carousel.
Following the Rodgers and Hammerstein theme, in October 2019, WAOS are returning to The King and I. It was last performed by WAOS in 1965. Once again we will see the junior and senior sections join to produce another classic musical. Set in 1860s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna, a British schoolteacher. The score includes; Whistle a Happy Tune, Getting to Know You and Shall We Dance.
In 2020, we're ‘Puttin' On the Ritz’ with Top Hat - The Musical. Top Hat features music and lyrics by Irving Berlin and is based on the 1935 film of the same name. The first stage adaptation of Top Hat premiered in Milton Keynes in August, 76 years after the film was released. Let's Face the Music and Dance and I'm Putting All My Eggs in One Basket feature in the score.
